YEARNING FOR YEN
ICE offers advice on travel money in Japan
International Currency Exchange (ICE) is offering advice to travellers thinking of heading to Japan for its fabulous displays of autumn colour or perhaps planning ahead to the famous cherry blossom festivals next April. Despite being the land of technological gadgets and the world's fastest trains, travellers to Japan shouldn't expect to be able to rely on credit cards, warns ICE. Arrive with a wallet full of Yen to avoid being left out on a limb.

"Japan is an exciting destination for UK travellers, but many do not realise that it is still a cash based society, so there are many places where credit cards won't work" advises Andrew Hamilton, Head of Marketing for ICE. "In addition, it seems that many travellers are not aware that they should notify their bank if they plan to use their cards abroad. If the bank suspects unauthorised use in a foreign country, especially as far afield as Japan, the cards may be stopped, which could result in lengthy and expensive phone calls to get them unblocked."

"For stress-free travel in Japan, we advise holidaymakers to buy their Yen in advance and carry cash. Exchanging money while you're there requires a bit of paperwork, so it's easier to change it before you go. And they should make good use of hotel safes and deposit boxes to avoid carrying around large sums of cash while on their travels."
