FAQs - Prepaid Cards

Frequently asked questions about the ICE Travellers cashcard, placing orders, loading funds and transactions and PIN information

1. Why choose the ICE Travellers Cashcard?

What is the ICE Travellers Cashcard?

The ICE Travellers Cashcard is a prepaid MasterCard currency card, available in Euros, US Dollars and Sterling. It is not a credit card. Find out more here.

I buy my currency when abroad using my debit or credit card. What benefits would a prepaid card give me over my own bank cards?

Safe, secure and suitable for any trip abroad, the ICE Travellers Cashcard is an award-winning and convenient alternative to taking cash. The ICE Travellers Cashcard is also free of fees* for its use, unlike the vast majority of debit and credit cards. Additionally, you get an emergency backup card free of charge, and you can enjoy 1.5% cashback on any purchase of €/$/£ 50 or more.

I always take cash with me on holiday, why should I consider a prepaid card instead?

Taking the ICE Travellers Cashcard instead of cash means you are better protected against loss or theft, thanks to the Chip & PIN protection and the back-up card you are provided with as standard.

Is a prepaid card better than taking travellers cheques?

Travellers cheques are very quickly becoming outmoded and it is becoming harder to exchange them. You can also be hit with commission charges when changing them into cash.

How does a prepaid card work?

The ICE Travellers Cashcard works much the same as a debit card, except you simply top up the exact funds you require onto it. It is Chip & PIN protected, so you will be able to withdraw cash from ATMs and use it for point of sale transactions.

Am I eligible for a card?

To be eligible for an ICE Travellers Cashcard, you must be a UK resident, be at least 18 years of age and be registered on the electoral roll at the address you provide when setting up your account.

2. Applying for a Card

Can anyone apply for a card?

To be eligible for an ICE Travellers Cashcard, it is required that you are a UK resident, of at least 18 years of age and that you are registered on the electoral roll at the address you provide for your account.

How do I apply for an ICE Travellers Cashcard?

Head to the main ICE Travellers Cashcard page here, then select which currency card you would like; Euro, US Dollar or Sterling; using the options provided. After you have chosen, simply enter the amount you would like to load onto the card (a minimum of £50 worth of currency). You can then add another card to your basket in a different currency. Once you have added all the cards you require, you will be asked to either register with ICE or sign in.

During the registration process you will need to provide your personal information, including your UK driving licence or passport details. Once you have successfully opened an account, you will need to complete your order by paying with your debit/credit card or by bank transfer.

Which card (Euro, US Dollar or Sterling) is suitable for me?

If you are travelling to a country that uses US Dollars or Euros then we suggest you take a US Dollar or Euro Travellers Cashcard. If you are travelling to any other country then we would suggest that you take the Sterling card.

How many cards may I have?

You can have one primary card per denomination; each primary card will be issued with a backup card.

Can I collect my ICE Travellers Cashcard at one of your branches?

The ICE Travellers Cashcard can currently only be ordered online for home delivery.

Why can't your system sufficiently verify me?

We use a third party system to verify the identity of all of our customers. This is a legal requirement to help combat fraud and money laundering. If the system we use is unable to verify your identity, this could be due to a number of reasons, which include:

  • You have input incorrect information about your personal details.
  • The address you have input is not your residential address.
  • You have only recently moved in to your home address.
  • You are not on the electoral roll at the address provided.

For more information please call us on +44 (0) 330 123 1430 or request a call back.

Will you carry out a credit check when I order a card?

No, because we are not offering a credit service. We will, however, perform a security check in line with anti-money laundering and anti-fraud guidelines.

I am not a UK citizen; can I still order a card?

You do not have to be a UK citizen, but you do have to be a UK resident and on the electoral roll to order an ICE Travellers Cashcard.

Yes. Simply sign in to your account, select Card Freeze from the My Account menu, and follow the on-screen instructions.

6. Topping Up Your Card

How do I top up?

Sign in to your account, choose Top-up Card on the 'Manage Your Card' page, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Why can't I top-up?

Firstly, check out the restrictions we have on top-ups:

  • You can only top-up once in 24 hours
  • The maximum number of top-ups per month is 5, and these can total up to £5,000 / $10,000 / €7,500
  • The maximum annual load is £10,000 / $20,000 / €15,000
  • The maximum balance at any one time is £5,000 / $10,000 / €7,500
  • If paying by credit or debit card, the payment card must be registered to the same address as your ICE Travellers Cashcard
  • If you are topping-up within these restrictions and still having problems, please email cashcard@iceplc.com with your name, address and details of the issue.

I have placed an order, but funds are not showing as being debited from my bank account?

Provided you are in receipt of an Order Acknowledgement and you have an order number, then your order has been successful. On your Order Acknowledgement it will tell you the payment method. If it says credit/debit card, then your payment has been successful, but it may take a few days for the funds to show as debited from your bank account. If the payment method shows as bank transfer, then you need to transfer the funds to us, using the bank details on your order acknowledgement.

How do I know my payment details are secure?

All your information is authenticated before going to a secure computer server. The encryption process takes the characters you enter on your PC and converts them into bits of code that are then securely transmitted over the Internet. Only the secure server can read this data. Finally, we run a data integrity test to make sure that any data sent has been transferred successfully and has not been tampered with in any way. Our processes make sure that any personal information remains exactly that - personal.

Please note: This guarantee only applies to credit / debit card purchases made using the ICEPLC secure server. In the event of unauthorised use of your credit / debit card, you must notify your card provider in accordance with its rules and procedures.

What methods of payments are accepted?

You can pay using MasterCard and Visa credit or debit cards and via bank transfer. Please note using a credit card will incur a 2% fee.

How do I make a bank transfer?

You can make a bank transfer through online banking, telephone banking or in branch. Please contact your bank if you are unsure of how to do this. Our bank details, for you to transfer the money to, will be included on your Order Acknowledgement.

What rate will I get when I top-up?

You will get the ICE Travellers Cashcard rate displayed on our website on the day the order is placed.

You can also check your balance at any ATM in the same way you would your debit card, or receive it via text, by texting +44 (0) 7786 207 053 during business hours. We aim to respond to all text messages within 1 business hour.

  • Monday to Friday: 9:00am to 5:30pm

How far back can I check transactions on my statement?

Transaction information is stored for 13 months on your statement.

How can I check my balance?

You can check your balance by logging in to your online account, at an ATM or by texting BALANCE with the last 4 digits of your card to +44 (0) 7786 207 053.

Please note to use the text service your mobile number must be registered with us and you must text from that mobile number.

When I check the balance at a UK ATM the GBP amount is different. Why?

With the balance on the card being in Euros or US Dollars, when you check the balance at a normal UK ATM the foreign balance on the card is converted from Euro/US Dollar to GBP at that ATM's exchange rates. These will appear different from those provided by ICE, but do not affect your balance.

For an accurate balance either check it online here, or at a Euro/US Dollar ATM.

8. Lost / Stolen Cards

How do I report my card lost/stolen?

You can do it online through your account or you can call us on +44 (0) 1455 897 896.

9. Currency Buyback / Transferring Funds

How do I return currency to you under your Same Rate Buyback Guarantee?

Simply complete the online form and you will receive a refund within 3 working days.

I have currency left on my card after my holiday. Will you buy it back and at what rate?

Yes, if you have topped up in the last 7 days we will buyback up to €/$100 at the same rate. Anything over this amount or if your last top-up was more than 7 days ago will be refunded at the buyback rate of the day we receive the request.

If it is outside the 7 day period the refund will be made according to the buy-back rate on the day the request is processed. If you would like to request a buyback please complete a buyback form.

I filled in the buyback form but have not yet received my refund

You will receive a refund within 3 working days, unless we contact you to inform you otherwise. If it has been longer than 3 working days since you submitted the buyback form, please email cashcard@iceplc.com with your name and address so that we can investigate.

I own cards in two different currencies. Can I transfer balances between the two cards (e.g. transfer €500 across to my Sterling card)?

No, this is not possible. The ICE Travellers Cashcard can only be loaded with Sterling by placing an order with us either via your online account or calling us on +44 (0) 330 123 1430 during our business hours of Monday-Friday 9:00am-5:30pm and Saturday 10:00am-1:00pm.

10. Rates & Fees

Why is the card exchange rate different from the cash rate?

Due to the measures taken to ensure that the ICE Travellers Cashcard is a fee-free* card, we are not able to offer quite the same rates as we do for currency orders. We do, however, run regular promotions and offers, and on occasion the Cashcard rates can be even better than our cash rates.

Will I get the same exchange rate every time I top-up?

No, you will receive the exchange rate displayed in the cashcard section of the website at the time of placing the order.

How much does the card cost?

It is free if your initial load is £700 or more. ICE Travellers Cashcards purchased with less than £700 loaded onto them cost £4.75. Will I be charged when making ATM withdrawals?

ICE does not charge you for using your card. Please be aware, however, that some ATM providers may levy a fee for their usage. They are obliged to make you aware of this fee before you complete the transaction.

11. Cashback

When will I get my Cashback?

Cashback is available for purchases on Euro, US Dollar and Sterling cards up until the end of specified reward periods. Cashback on purchases made using Euro, US Dollar or Sterling ICE Travellers Cashcards after March 1st 2017 will be paid into your Account no later than May 31st 2018.

How do I earn Cashback?

Cashback will be earned on any purchase over 50 Euros/US Dollars/Sterling made on a Euro, US Dollar, or Sterling Travellers Cashcard.

Will I always earn Cashback for as long as I own my card?

The cashback offer is assessed yearly and is subject to change or withdrawal.

Are there any limits on the amount of Cashback I can be rewarded?

The maximum amount of Cashback that you can earn is dependent on other limits on the card, such as the maximum load limits. For example, a cardholder can load a maximum of $20,000, €15,000 or £10,000 per annum. Therefore the maximum Cashback they could possibly earn during our current ‘reward period’ would be $300, €225 or £150 based on these limits.

Can you pay me my Cashback early?

No, unfortunately this is not possible, except for any specific promotions notified by us. Any Cashback you are due will be paid into your account no later than 31 May 2018.

12. Card limitations

Where can I/can't I use an ICE Travellers Cashcard?

The ICE Travellers Cashcard can be used anywhere the MasterCard logo is shown. It can be used in ATMs to withdraw cash and at retail outlets to pay for goods or services.

Please be aware there are some instances where the card cannot be used:

  • For payment at motorway toll booths
  • Online gaming websites
  • At casinos or other gambling institutions
  • To make regular money transfers

Please also note that it is not advisable to use your card for pre-authorisation transactions such as hotel deposits, self-service petrol pumps or car hire payments, as the full pre-authorisation amount is deducted immediately from your available balance. We would suggest that you therefore use a credit card for such transactions.

Hotels and car hire companies make pre-authorisations to secure the correct amount of funds for the duration of your stay / use of the car. Self-service petrol pumps will take a minimum pre-authorisation of $/€/£ 80 as soon as you insert your card, in addition to the actual amount required for payment. $/€/£ 80 will be released back onto your account after 15 days have elapsed.

Are there any countries where I cannot use my ICE Travellers Cashcard?

Your ICE Travellers Cashcard can be used anywhere in the world that accepts MasterCard. Very rarely, instances may occur where we ‘block’ all cards being used in certain countries. You can still use the card in these countries, you simply need to tell us prior to travelling, and we will ensure it can be used.

The current list of blocked countries is as follows:

  • India
  • Canada

This list is kept up-to-date at all times, so if you are unsure just check here before you travel.

How long is my card valid for?

Your card is valid for 5 years. When you receive it, it will have an expiry* date on it just like a debit/credit card.

*Cards issued prior to 12th May 2014 will have a 3 year validity period.

My card has expired – what do I do?

To renew your Travellers Cashcard, simply send an email to cashcard@iceplc.com, including confirmation of your name and address and we will issue you with a lovely new card. This email will need to come from the email address your account is registered with. Once a new card has been issued, your old card will be cancelled. If you would like a refund of any balance left on the old card, then please fill out a buyback form.

Where can I use my card?

The ICE Travellers Cashcard can be used almost anywhere that accepts MasterCard, but there are a few exceptions where the card cannot be used:

  • For payment at motorway toll booths
  • For participating in online gaming website
  • At casinos or other gambling Institutions
  • To make regular money transfers

We also advise you do not use your card at pay-at-pump petrol stations or as a security deposit because the company will ‘pre-authorise’ an amount when you do this. This amount will then be taken from your available balance and it can take up to 15 days to be returned. Therefore we do advise you use an alternative card for these transaction.

Can I use my card at a pay-at-pump petrol stations, toll-booths or similar self service outlets?

You can, but we do strongly advise that you do not. The company will ‘pre-authorise’ an amount when you do this, which will then be deducted from your available balance. It can then take up to 15 days for this to be returned. Therefore we advise that you use an alternative card for these transactions.

What if I spend more than the available funds on my card?

It should not be possible for you to spend more than the available balance on your card.
In exceptional circumstances, transactions may be authorised taking you beyond your available balance. We will send you an invoice for the outstanding amount and you must then repay us in full within 10 business days of receiving the invoice from us.
We will contact you prior to sending the invoice to ensure you are aware that you have exceeded your available balance.

Do I need to find a specific ATM to withdraw funds from my card?

All ATMs that display the MasterCard symbol can be used.

Why isn't my card working?

The main 4 reasons for an ICE Travellers Cashcard not working are:

  • The card has not been activated – you just need to sign in to your account and activate the card.
  • The incorrect PIN is being used – call the PIN retrieval number on +44 (0) 1455 897 896 to ensure you have the correct PIN. Please have your ICE Travellers Cashcard to hand when you call.
  • There are insufficient funds in your account – you can check your balance by signing in to your account, visiting an ATM or via text message. Ensure you are using your main and not your backup card.
  • There are very few places the card cannot be used. Please see 'Where can I use my ICE Travellers Cashcard?' for more information.

If this information has not helped, please email us at cashcard@iceplc.com with your name, address and details of the issues you are having and we will get back to you within 24 hours*.

In the majority of cases, this occurs due to browser issues. The first port of call is to delete your cookies and temporary internet files, and ensure your security settings are set to medium. No, your backup card can only be activated if the primary is card is reported as lost or stolen.

16. Pre-Authorisations / Deposits (e.g. for car hire or accommodation)
