About the Peruvian Nuevo Sol
The Peruvian Nuevo Sol was officially introduced in 1991. The poor economic state of the 1980's had led to hyperinflation of the Inti. The Inti currency was named after the Sun God of the Incas and sol coincidentally means sun in Spanish. Since the introduction of the Sol the currency has maintained a relatively stable rate against the US Dollar.
The banknotes follow the pattern of many other currencies with famous landmarks such as Macchu Picchu depicted on the obverse and national heroes or iconic figures on the obverse. José Quiñones Gonzáles is depicted on the 10 Nuevos Soles banknote and he was a celebrated as national hero for his sacrifice in a war against Ecuador.
