A single Won is divided into 100 Jeon and the currency currently comes in banknotes denominations of 1000, 5000, 10,000 and 50,000 Won, in addition to 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 Won coins. South Korea developed its own currency after Korea became divided into northern and southern territories after World War II. After a large counterfeiting scandal in the mid 2000's a new edition of the South Korean Won was introduced and many of the 5000 Won notes were confiscated.
