During its period of British colonisation, Trinidad and Tobago adopted the sterling currency. They would use both the British West Indies Dollar and the East Caribbean Dollar before adopting their own currency in 1964. The Dollar is subdivided in 100 Cents. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Trinidad and Tobago was ruled by varying military presences such as the British, French and Spanish but gained independence in 1962 and later became a republic in 1976.
